Great product
n
I tried Learn to read in 100 easy lessons with my daughter and gave up. There was too much writing on a page and she just couldn't stay focused. This is well organized. The lessons don't take long and are organized well. There are a few words on each page of the "workbook" i.e. all the "at" words such as bat, cat, mat, etc. The following page reviews words already learned. I don't use the audio CD but my daughter enjoys the games for the computer. I wish it had a pencil workbook included.
n

Hiaasen's best work (for kids or adults) in years
n
In "Scat," Carl Hiaasen sets aside his recent experiments with first-person narration, and delivers his best work in years. For the first time, Hiaasen brings a character from his "adult" novels into his kid-lit world, placing Twilly Spree from "Sick Puppy" in the middle of a mystery involving a missing high school biology teacher, a swamp fire and a pimple-faced classmate who might not turn out to be the thug that he seems.n
n
The first chapter grabbed me with a vivid, almost sickening, recreation of one of those stressful high school classroom moments with a way-too-intense teacher whom everyone feared. The narrative never slows down, but remains accessible to an advanced elementary reader throughout. Adults will enjoy the frequent references to "Sick Puppy" and other classic Hiaasen themes.n
n
In all, another don't-miss event for Hiaasen fans, and a great introduction to a fun author for those who aren't fans yet.
n

It is ideal for readers age 10-13, but has a well-plotted mystery that could entertain adult readers as well (particularly Hiaasen's fans).n
n
It all begins when Mrs. Bunny Starch, feared Biology teacher, disappears during a school field trip to the Black Vine Swamp -- where an illegal and undercover oil-drilling operation is taking place. Mrs. Starch regularly embarrasses and intimidates her students, so there's no shortage of suspects who may have had a hand in her disappearance.n
n
It's up to two adventurous students -- Nick and Marta -- to solve the mystery. They must navigate a web of weird characters -- an eccentric eco-avenger, a juvenile delinquent named Smoke, a crooked oil prospector, and an endangered Florida panther -- in order to solve the mystery.n
n
SCAT is a page-turner with heart, humor, and adventure. A good book for both boys and girls, filled with the kind of wacky characters with which Hiaasen has built his career. n
n
You might consider checking out the film version of Hoot (New Line Platinum Series), too. Enjoy!
n

No matter just how you think you've figured out what's going on or about to happen, he throws a knuckle ball that threatens to become a bean ball, aimed right at your head. When he began writing YA books, he brought some of that with him, yet tempered for a younger audience.n
n
Scat is the story of Nick and Marta, whose biology teacher didn't return from a class field trip to the Black Vine swamp. Not that Mrs. Starch is going to be missed; she was the most fearsome teacher at Truman School. But neither of them believe that she was called away on a "family emergency," but instead was the victim of foul play, probably by Smoke, the class delinquent. Very quickly, and in typical Hiaasen fashion, the plot gets not only complicated, but ever-stranger players in this mystery come fast and furious. The story is appropriate for middle school and older, enjoyable to read, and reflects Hiaasen's love of the Florida wild lands.
n

My upbringing was apparently replicated by at least one other family. If you want to take a stroll back on memory lane to your childhood and reflect on how great those times were, this book is for you. It a compilation of short chapters on various activities I and the author managed to survive (what does not kill you makes you stronger... right?).
n

I think Ann Brashares was trying to portray how not all friendships are as sturdy as the original Sisterhood's and sometimes friends grow apart. This book is charming but definetly not as good as the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. I felt 3 Willows was reaching for younger readers then the Traveling Pants novels because of the ages of the girls and the decision they face. I find this an odd criteria because I figure the people who would want to read this book would be those who have read the Traveling Pants series. Besides that factor, all in all I found 3 Willows touching and heartfelt.
n

This is a beautiful, positive, book to share with a child
n
I love this book, and my kids love this book. It is about a bunny who wants to run away, but wherever he says he will go, the mother bunny says she will follow and take care of him. To me, this story is very loving and special, and the pictures are beautiful, you can tell someone put a lot of thought and love into the illustrations, they really are works of art and fun to look at.n
n
That is how I feel about my kids, and I want them to know that. When my older daughter said she was going to run away, I told she could not because it was against the rules. (I read that idea somewhere.) I know some people would tell their kid, "I'll help you pack!" But my daughter tends to be shy and sensitive, and I would never say that to her!n

n

Kenneth C. Davis has written a wonderfully informative and entertaining book that anyone can enjoy. The history in this book, is presented in a fun and interesting way, it is not just dates and names. The biggest complaint of this book that I can find, is that it is biased and opinionated. I agree that Kenneth has biased this book, but personally, I agree with his bias. I recomend that you read this book. However, read it with an open mind and heart. I think that every person can get some wonderful information from this book. n
n
n
If you don't learn history, you are doomed to repeat it.
n

However, I also always give the book along with the CD. With Brook Shields narrating, and wonderful music, the CD makes the book "read along" in a way that every child seems to really enjoy. I highly recommend the music/narrated version as well. Together, they are a great gift. I reall like the Brooke SHields/Glen Roven version. n
n
The Runaway Bunny/Paddington Bear's First Concert/Tubby the Tuba
n

Simply Touching
n
3 Willows is an amazing young adult novel by Ann Brashares, author of the Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants series.n
n
This book is sort of a follow up, but no a sequel to the Sisterhood book. It takes place in the same town as the STP novels, but does not feature the 4 girls of the sisterhood. Instead, it focuses on 3 new characters. The book is about their summer before their freshman year of high school. n
n
Written in the same style as the Sisterhoood books, this novel echoes all the lovable things from Brashares' other novels. The themes present in the STP novels such as young love, friendship, adventure, and more are all sprinkled throughout the pages of this amazing new book.n
n
As you follow these 3 girls through their secrete journeys, you also can find camos of Effie (Lena's sister), Tibby's siblings in addition to mention of the famous sisterhood girls themselves. However, this book is not an add on to the Sisterhood series; it is the beginning of a new sisterhood.n
n
This book was so moving and touching that I cried at the end. I advise every girl, fans of the STP series especially, to read this compelling novel. Even if you are an adult, you will be touched by this novel.
n

We weren't as impressed with the author's more 'Adult' book, The Last Summer (of You and Me). However, Ms Brashares is back in form with Three Willows. It's a bittersweet journey of friendship between three girls about to enter high school. They each grow personally, and together through tribulation and triumph. Each character is strong and independent but struggling to find their own place in the world, and learning about life, friendship and themselves. I look forward to watching them grow in future sequels!
n

Well Written, typical Adult romance book, NOT 14&UP
n
I can't think of a person I know who would not enjoy the first half of this book. The author has an engaging writing style and pulls us in to immediately connect with our protagonist, Katsa. What lacks is any form of conclusion. Granted, it is to be part of a series, but that does not make up for the disappointment the second half delivers. n
We live in the 21st century, which many people (particularly women) feel is to be some sort of liberating time. As a woman, I feel completely liberated. I am not however, completely ignorant between the difference of LOVE STORY and LUST STORY. To romanticize the idea of non-commitment to a "14 & up" audience is ridiculous. This is especially infuriating since it is quite evident the author is bent on convincing us that this is how strong women look at life, and how they should behave. The characters show inconsistency with their moral/ethical outlook. Inconsistencies in character make it very difficult to suspend-our-disbelief. I found myself quite removed from Katsa about half way through. n
The writing style and talent of the author is to be commended. The message of this book, inconsistency of character and lack of conclusion prevents me from recommending it to anyone.
n

Buy this book!
n
It's About: Polly, Jo and Ama have been best friends since grade school, but with their freshman year in high school looming, they've grown apart. Before leaving for their respective summers away, they return all their belongings to each other and head off into the world, separately. The titular three willows they planted in grade school together have been abandoned.n
n
Dealing with an alcoholic mother, Polly throws herself into her latest obsession- modeling. Too curvy, too short, too bucktoothed, Polly nevertheless "diets" herself to a thinner, more model-esque weight, and convinces her mother to enroll her in a local modeling school that turns out to be nothing much, but shopping and sitting around with other bored girls talking about modeling.n
n
After the death of her brother, Jo's family has been slowly falling apart. This summer, her parents finally separate- a fact she doesn't discover until she's at the beach house with her mother, and finds out in an abrupt dinner conversation with her father that he won't be joining the family this time. Instead of dealing with her fractured family, Jo throws herself into her new high school friends at the restaurant where she works, and into an exciting romance that starts with kisses on a bus, and names asked for later.n
n
Finally, Ama is a bookish overachiever who somehow ends up in a Wilderness camp for the summer instead of an academic camp like she hoped for. Steeped in her sister Esi's shadow- Esi made it to college at 16- Ama is forced to suffer an outdoors adventure for which she's entirely unprepared. Her hands are battered, her feet bloodied and blistered, and the only bright spots for her are the occasional kindness shown to her by a boy named Noah. Her tentmate brings a new boy back to the tent every night- eventually including Noah, and Ama ends up lost in the mountains when her fellow campers accidentally leave her behind.n
n
Naturally, the Three Willows find themselves back together, firmer, better friends for their bittersweet summers apart. There are a few mentions of the Sisterhood girls- longtime fans will be delighted at the brief connections that thread this story into the existing universe, but new readers won't be lost- the mythology of the Sisterhood books are not required reading to appreciate the subtle, thoughtful weight of 3 Willows.n
n
Brashares' voice has matured, lending an honest, natural clarity to this novel- and I personally find it to be a better, more masterful work than the Sisterhood books. Ama, Polly and Jo are immature and mature in exactly the right way, perverse and cruel and kind and giving all at once. It's a beautiful distillation of that age, 13 given away to 14, almost to high school, but not quite. I really enjoyed the truth and natural grace here, and the sympathy shown to all of the characters, even when their behavior isn't very empathetic. n
n
Would I Give This Book to a Teen: Yes, yes, yes, definitely. This is one of those milestone books, that you save and give to the next girl in your life who reaches exactly that age.n
n
Would I Give This Book to an Adult: I gave it to my mom, because I think she'll appreciate the lovely, literary quality of the writing. But I plan to give it to my best friend, and to my best friend from Junior High School, because I think we'll recognize each other in it. n
n
An Additional Totally Shallow Note: This is a physically beautiful book. The design inside and out is quiet, thoughtful and lovely. The vector willow on the front cover theme is carried throughout the book, and I love the judicious use of flowing script to include facts about willow trees that are relevant to the text. It's an elegant book that was a pleasure to hold and admire, besides enjoying the text inside it.
n

It’s a beautiful distillation of that age, 13 given away to 14, almost to high school, but not quite. I really enjoyed the truth and natural grace here, and the sympathy shown to all of the characters, even when their behavior isn’t very empathetic. n
n
Would I Give This Book to a Teen: Yes, yes, yes, definitely. This is one of those milestone books, that you save and give to the next girl in your life who reaches exactly that age.n
n
Would I Give This Book to an Adult: I gave it to my mom, because I think she’ll appreciate the lovely, literary quality of the writing. But I plan to give it to my best friend, and to my best friend from Junior High School, because I think we’ll recognize each other in it. n
n
An Additional Totally Shallow Note: This is a physically beautiful book. The design inside and out is quiet, thoughtful and lovely. The vector willow on the front cover theme is carried throughout the book, and I love the judicious use of flowing script to include facts about willow trees that are relevant to the text. It’s an elegant book that was a pleasure to hold and admire, besides enjoying the text inside it.

The three have been friends since third grade, but now with high school approaching, they find themselves being drawn in separate ways and spending the summer apart. n
n
Ama is all about academics, extra credit, and schoolwork. She's signed up to spend the summer at a camp that will give her school credit. She's hoping to be in the library all day, but instead finds herself signed up for the outdoor wilderness hike. Ama is not an outdoorsy girl and can't imagine herself spending the summer hiking and sleeping in a tent. n
n
Jo is spending the summer at her family beach house and working as a bus girl at a local restaurant. She's hoping to make friends with the older girls from the "in" crowd so she can start high school in the right group. But a fling with a mysterious boy threatens to change all of Jo's plans. n
n
Polly is stuck at home babysitting until she gets the idea that she could be a model. She throws herself into the world of modeling camp and starts to lose herself - and only her friends can help bring her back. n
n
One of Ann Brashares strengths is that she puts so much into her characters that readers can always find someone like them. The experiences the girls have never seem over the top or unrealistic, and their friendship will resonate with readers making the transition from middle school to high school. n
n
Although reminiscent of THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS series, Polly, Ama, and Jo each bring something new to the story - and their stories are original. Fans will enjoy the appearances made by characters from the previous series, as well. n
n
3 WILLOWS is a great pick for readers looking for a wonderful, charming book about the challenges of friendship and growing up. n
n
Reviewed by: Sarah Bean the Green Bean Teen Queen
n

Funniest book I've read in a long time.
n
I'm giving this 5 stars simply because this is the most hilarious laugh out loud book I have read in a very long time. First you must realize that this is a work of pure science fiction once you understand that then you are good to go. Its a simple story of a young boy whose midichlorian count is astronomically high, he was conceived immaculately from super beings one named Hope (no relation to Bob) and another named Promise (no relations to the stripper, although I heard Promise is smoking hot). Now the story starts off with random mother and son who are staring at a box. Obama magically appears within the box, he is able to manipulate time and space since he has an operating thetan level of XIII, one less then John Travolta, and two less then Tom Cruise. Obama begins to entice the little boy with candy and a magical adventure to yesterdayland begins as we follow the boy as he follows Obama growing up to be the chosen one to defend Earth from the offspring of Xenu & Satan, a little girl named Sarah. n
n
My favorite part of this magical ponyrific story is when Obama is seen taking orders from a hallucination of a dead man, and the little boy upon seeing this states that he misses his daddy, whom i presumed is either dead or more likely in another state with another woman. It was heartfelt and heartwarming and made my heart beat with its life affirmingness. n
n
I recommend this book to all Scientologist, people who believe Jedi's are real and or has listed Jedi as their religion on a Census report, little children who believe that Santa died for their sins and brings them presents to celebrate how well they decorated their homes with bright flashing lights, and to anyone who voted for Obama that believe things will actually change now and that hope is all you need to feed your family.
n

I felt like I was beside Mandela every step of the way as he narrated ever so beautifully his life from his childhood in Transkei, in college in Fort Hare, as a lawyer in Jo'burg, and as a prisoner at the infamous Robben Island. I was sad the book ended so abruptly soon after Mandela was released, for these were the most trying moment for South Africa. n
If there is ever a book that anyone must read before they die, this is the book. I couldn't sleep, and this book was an excellent companion.n
n
This novel can't compare to more involved "adult" fantasy (think Tolkien or Tad Williams) but it is entertaining and the characters interested me. The premise of the "graces" (a magical skill that could take any form) is a good one, and I like that they have differently colored eyes that set them apart from the normals. It made for an interesting dynamic and social drama throughout the book. It seemed quite natural that the lead character is a woman, and that her grace is that she is an unmatched killing machine. Here internal conflicts about her grace and how it made her relate to others was intriguing.n
n
The story and world it takes place is well thought out and solid. If I had to quibble it would be that the characters never felt fully fleshed out and that we were only scratching the surface of what the world of the Seven Kingdoms, but I guess that is what sequels are for. It kept me wanting more and in this case, that is a good thing. I think this book will hit it's demographic of a teen audience squarely and they will really enjoy it.n
At 37, I did too, though I did see some plot points coming from a mile away.n
n
Don't let the cheesy video promo at the top of Amazon's product page dissuade you. Graceling is a solid fantasy novel and a rewarding read.
Style change
n
I have read and really liked all of the previous Maximum Ride books. I have no doubt that I will like this (Final Warning)one also when I read it. n
I have been avoiding doing so because I hoped I would find a paperback copy that was published in the same format as the others in the series were. I have given up on that though-much to my disgust. This version is a shiny covered, odd sized version that does not match the others at all. The picture of the girl doesn't match the description of Max in the other books and the "Maximum Ride" words are different also. I guess maybe it is a movie tie in version which I never like as much as the originals. I'm just not as interested as I was. n
I imagine many are saying, "Don't be so picky!"; "What difference does it make, it is the story that counts." Well maybe, but it DOES matter to me. If I have a collection, a series, a set, that is what I want it to be, not mismatched oddities.

The picture of the girl doesn’t match the description of Max in the other books and the “Maximum Ride” words are different also. It is beautiful. The sentences are simple, standarded, clean, yet not boring. I read a lot of history, biography, and science. Very few books come to close in terms of langugage. One thing I do not like in a book is the use of a lot of "-", "( )". You won't see many of these in this book. I am glad that Lady Katsa has taken control of her future. I think it is a great read for all girls young(not to young) and old to read. I didn't even have an idea about the book or heard anything about it. I just saw it one day at a book store and bought it without knowing the contents. I am glad I did. I couldn't put it down. I think I read it in 4 days. I laughed, cheered, cried, laughed some more, and cried some more. Truely worth buying. I hope there are more to come of Katsa & Prince Po's lives for us to read in the near future. If anyone knows if there is to be a sequel please post it so I will know.n

n

To Clear It Up
n
It is true that there is sexual content, but it does not describe it. It is the sort of writing for young adults. If you did not read carefully, you might even miss the "sex scenes". It basically leads you to think that they are going to have sex, but then skips over the whole scene.n
n
This is the type of book for young adults to read. Kistin Cashore is not treating her audience like fourth graders, which is what many authors that write for young adults do. I know what many young adults talk about, and I know that many of their discussions invole sex. So, it is not a new thing to them, and many nowadays teenagers are even having sex. n
n
Also, the characters in this book are having sex without getting married. But, the reason for this is because Katsa, the main character, vowed never to marry. Therefore she does not want to break her private vow to herself. And, she does not want to marry and tie herself to a man in that way. Katsa does not want to be responsible for taking care of a man and baring his childen. n
n
If you have an issue with the fact that they are having sex before marriage, then don't read the book. I respect the fact that there are people who strongly disagree with this concept. But, remember tis is not real! And if you do not want your child to think that sex before marriage is ok after reading this book, remind them that it is not real. Also, keep in mind that Katsa and Poe never will marry.n
n
Graceling is pewrfectly safe for young adults to read and also a really great book.
n

The illustrator includes images of many famous monuments, quaint neighborhoods, and important buildings. I really enjoyed sharing these pictures of my favorite city with my children.n
n
Cons:n
n
The story is cute and ends well, but at one point a the parents of a missing girl fear she is dead. While the text rhymes and the story itself is not dark, my non-toddler children were a little bit disturbed by this portion of the book. Since it is most parents' worst fear to lose their child (and fear they are dead), it was a bit disturbing to me as well. In any case, the ending is very cute and overall it is an enjoyable book. n
n

n

He has been in normal kindergarten for 2 years now, but yet to learn proper reading skills. I realized that the kindergarten does not really emphasize on reading, but is very heavy on homework (we live in Malaysia). During the long year-end holidays, I was keen to get him started on reading lessons at home. Through Amazon, I noticed this seems like the best bet for my son. I am very happy to report that my son's reading progress have been nothing short of excellent thus far. This has boost his confidence tremendously.
n

Right out of the box, I loved the fact that there was no need for tedious pre-prep work for me & no writing to frustrate little hands was needed for her. With the help of the pre-k program, she learned her entire alphabet before she turned 2 & all of the letter sounds by 2 1/2. Shortly after her 3rd birthday, we began the K program & she performed beautifully. She just loved having her own little books that she could read all by herself & looked forward to our 7-15 minute "lessons". The lessons were SO easy to follow that we didn't even need the audio cd to guide us after the 3rd lesson! By the time we reached the 5th book, she barely need ME! She has since completed the K program & began the 1st grade program just 2 months shy of her 4th b-day!n
n
HOP is a straightforward, easy to use, &, most importantly, effective program that has made this busy mom's life so much simpler! I recommend it hands down above any other program for value & results.
n

Okay. So I agree that this wasn't as good as the rest.
n
However, what bothers me about some of the reviews, is the global warming thing. From the very first Max book, her mission was to save the world. As each book progressed, the global warming issue also progressed. We should have expected that as an avenue for Patterson to take. Personally, I think he did a pretty good job of incorporating it. What I didn't care for, though, was the powers that these kids were suddenly given, or made aware of. I loved Total to pieces and he made me giggle frequently throughout the book. Again, not my favorite Max book, but not poor enough to give it less than 3 or 4 stars.
n

The next day I carried the book to my two sections of sophomore literature at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where we were just starting a block on Williams. The students loved it just as much as I did, and I'm sure the pictures helped them get into the poems. For me, especially, it was liberating to see an icon for "The Great Figure" that wasn't the familiar one by Charles Demuth.n
n
But I found two errors to correct in the next printing. The illustrator's note runs together the title of Williams's poem, "The Great Figure," and the title of Demuth's painting, "I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold." And the chronology at the back of the book gets the beginning of World War II wrong by nine years.
n

Together they make for a book that you won't want to put down. n
Readers of Stranger Things Happen and Magic For Beginners will find a few repeats, but that's OK because Link's stories are so good they deserve to be read more than once. This collection is technically aimed at the young adult market, which only means that the main characters tend to be teenagers. At no time does Link write down to her audience. Adults will easily be drawn in and swept away by each of these stories.n
Pretty Monsters falls under the broad umbrella of speculative fiction, but that doesn't begin to describe the magic, weirdness and wonder that Link is able to convey in each of her stories. If you've never read any of her stories before, you are in for a treat, and if you have, you know exactly what to expect, and won't be disappointed.
n

I passed by it as I shopped at Target and then browsed thru its pages. The title stopped me in my tracks and simply made me want to gag. Obviously the liberals have no shame at all. Despite what the title may imply (and what libs want us to believe), Obama is NOT the new messiah. Politically, the man hasn't accomplished a thing at all, except hypnotizing the most unthinking sector of the US.n
n
GAG. Do the libs think we're all in awe and in, as another reviewer nicely put it, "breathless worship" of the man? If someone published a book about a conservative with such a title, it would make national news and liberals would RABIDLY (and yet euphorically) use the book as an example to demonstrate how conservatives are such duped, dopey "sheep." n
n
Want to be a smarter, better-informed American? Start with reading the Weekly Standard magazine. And absolutely do not pass up an opportunity to read McCain's book Character is Destiny - that will show you the humble yet steel-girded soul of the opposing candidate who was never once peddled as the new messiah. GASP! Conservative DO have brains!
n

A book that I didn't even know existed. Needless to say, my son was not thrilled to receive the book, and I have not heard back from the sender yet as to why this purchase wasn't better advertised as a book rather than a DVD. Perhaps website should be more clear as to exactly what it is you are selling. Even when opening the book, there was nothing on the wrapper, no stickers, etc. to indicate it was a book. Honestly, I thought it was a special DVD edition with a small book included. But no. Very disappointing. I'd really like to return it if the seller would return my messages.
n

Children are no exception. This book is a tool that parents and grandparents will enjoy using and the kids will enjoy it as well. The illustrations are well done, the stories entertaining, the characters engaging and the 7 Habits are a good, effective beginning for every child (and adult). Children have always thrived on structure and in today's stressful world, teaching them timeless values and principles will enable them to figure out how to take charge of their own lives. 7 Habits will help make any parent's life a little easier.
n

Nowadays, people must be organized in order to get everything done in a timely manner. Children are no exception. This book is a tool that parents and grandparents will enjoy using and the kids will enjoy it as well.
Great fairy tale novel and a great heroine
n
This is the first of Catherine Murdock's books I have read and I am happy to say that I am quite pleased with her work. I am a self-proclaimed fairy tale junkie and this is truly a book that hits the spot. The writing, while perhaps a little too proper, was elegant and superb and perhaps it's the contrast of the stiff writing of Ben's adventures that is the magic.n
n
That, and the fact that Benevolence "Ben" is a real girl. Even the anti-princesses of so many other fairy tale noels usually turn out to be very pretty, witty, and self-sufficient. Instead, our Ben is fat, childish, and spoiled. n
n
And that is why I liked her. Despite her flaws (or perhaps because of them) Ben was a marvelous heroine who properly grew as a character and most importantly told a great story.n
n
And that story was a lovely fairy tale, rather a mix of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty with another original story thrown into the works. There is magic, intrigue, adventure, romance--and Murdock handles it all in a very down-to-earth way. The romance did not quite do it for me (but it was close and I'm sure others will enjoy); then again, romance isn't at all the main point of this story.n
n
I'm not sure how this will stand in comparison to other fairy tale novels, but it is certainly very well done and worth a read.
n
