Our Authors & Illustrators of the Month: These writers and artists stand out for their stellar work, mastery of their craft and lasting contributions to children’s literature
AUTHOR ILLUSTRATOR
Jane Yolen
Jane Yolen has been so generous with her gifts of writing over the years (from the first book in 1963, and still writing!). At this time she has 379 published books, including not only gorgeous and rich children's picture books, but also science fiction and poetry. Some of our favorites, which we have included in our collection, are The Emperor and the Kite, The Seeing Stick, Merlin and the Dragons, and Owl Moon. She has been called “The Hans Christian Anderson of American children's literature” by Newsweek, and we agree.
AUTHOR ILLUSTRATOR
Patricia Polacco
Patricia Polacco has a knack for capturing very relevant and human issues, in a creative and beautiful way. To date, she has published 115 books for children, many centered on issues that are not often talked about or depicted in children's literature. She is known as a champion of classroom teachers (even more so since the shooting at Sandy Hook School in Connecticut, where she was an artist in residence). She visits schools all over the U.S. to support teachers and encourage students to reach out and include anyone who might be perceived as “different.” This gifted storyteller has written several of our favorite books.

AUTHOR ILLUSTRATOR
Demi
Demi is the award-winning author and illustrator of over 130 beautiful children's books. She is best known for her biographies of spritual figures including Buddha, Krishna, Mother Mary, Muhammad and the Dalai Lama. The Empty Pot, her best-selling title, was selected by former First Lady Barbara Bush to be read on “Mrs. Bush's Story Time,” sponsored by the Children's Literacy Initiative. This is a book we just loved, and we've offered it in multiple curations.
AUTHOR
Beth Ferry
We are excited about this author who is fairly new to the children's book scene. Her debut was in 2015 with Stick and Stone and A Small Blue Whale. Her books are fresh, upbeat and offer a fun point of view. Her choice of illustrators has been wonderful too. You will find Stick and Stone on our site, with its subtle anti-bullying message that is sweet and easy for even young children to relate to.
