This was one of the first modern picture books to kick off the trend of exploring American urban landscape and culture. CJ feels a draw to be like his friends until Grandma shows him all the special things he has access to that his friends don’t, sharing her wisdom as they travel across town on the bus to Market Street: “Sometimes when you’re surrounded by dirt, CJ, you’re a better witness for what’s beautiful.” This selection shares the valuable message with children that we each find beauty when and where we can.
