This book adds to the variety of books about children attempting to live their truth in an important way: it explores the conflict between a small boy making traditionally feminine clothing and decorative choices and their sibling. We see Casey’s desire to be like older sister Jessie, to wear nail polish like hers, a sparkly bracelet like hers, as well as Jessie’s pushback. And then we see Jessie defend Casey when older boys make fun of him — our heart goes out to her as she empathizes with him and chooses to protect him in a vulnerable moment. Pulls hard on our heartstrings. A precious gift to what is becoming the canon of gender aware kids lit.
