The Mulberry Bird: An Adoption Story

This poignant story of adoption is unusual as far as adoption stories go. It tells the story of a mother bird who finds herself, out of love for her child, realizing she needs to take him to another family to raise because she is unable to take care of him herself. This is an important subject to acknowledge at different stages for adopted children, who wonder what it was that caused them to be up for adoption in the first place. The story is told very tenderly and thoughfully, with charming chalk drawings of the bird and her baby. Curator’s note: This book is for older children especially, but could also be appropriate for younger ones who are ready for the concepts involved.
