Check out this powerful opinion piece by Stephanie Hayes of the Tampa Bay Times — on the banning of Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye by our school system. She’s right — the kids at this school board meeting spoke truth to power, with passion and eloquence. The energy in the room was palpable. My daughter and her friends and classmates attended in protest of this hasty decision made without student, parent or school community input — and in support of their exceptional teacher. The kids know injustice when they see it, and this book banning does not sit well with them! We were relieved to see the news yesterday that Pres. Biden signed an Executive Order that should counter the harmful "Don't Say Gay" law here in Florida -- which would hurt Florida kids and teachers thru censorship and book banning. We want to empower Florida teachers and parents to access the very best picture books for ages 3 to 10 on the important topics of gender identity, gender expression, same-sex parents, etc. Here we feature our curation "5 Best Picture Books About Gender Identity." These amazing books tell the real-life (or close to real-life) stories of trans boys and girls, what they have experienced and how they have successfully coped -- all children and adults will relate to their perseverance and resilience, and learn from them. Consider checking out one or more of these to share with a child you love! The "Don't Say Gay" law set to go into effect July 1st here in Florida amounts to censorship and book banning, will hurt Florida kids and teachers, and is a "grave abuse of power" by our governor -- the actions of an authoritarian state, not a democracy. This is no laughing matter!! Check out our new blog post featuring the best picture books on gender identity and related topics -- so you can quickly find great books on banned subjects to offer kids outside the classroom. We recommend amazing selections by Kyle Lukoff, Jodie Patterson, Jonathan Van Ness and others. Link in bio. Books on same-sex parents can be found in our Family curations. We hope you love these incredible books as much as we do! #LGBTQ #LGBTQyouth #TransYouth #Transgender #transrightsarehumanrights #dontsaygay #Pride #PrideMonth #HappyPride #WontHideMyPride #dunedinpride

Check it out for resources to help explain this complex topic to children — we’ve included books on authoritarianism, democracy, lying, disenfranchisement of Black voters, the electoral college, fear and bravery, violent uprising, coping with feelings and trauma. In this colorful and inspiring book, United States Senator @kirstengillibrand writes about ten important women who helped forge a path towards voting rights for women. There is a different entry for each of the women which provides a short biography and explains her contribution to the Women’s Rights movement. This makes the book an excellent introduction to the history of the movement and the fight for women’s rights. Illustrations by @mairakalman , Published by @knopfkids #vote
